Let's paint the picture of the role:

The R&D Specialist II is responsible for executing and delivering required analytical services within pre-agreed timelines to both local and global AkzoNobel R&D requestors, supporting new and incremental product development activities. This role involves maintaining and adjusting state-of-the-art quality test methods, possessing strong knowledge of relevant equipment and resin and paint properties, and ensuring the operation and maintenance of one or more instruments.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for operating and maintaining one or more chromatographic instruments such as HPLC/UPLC, (triple-)GPC, GPEC, GC(-MS), TD-GC-MS, HS-GC, LC-MS, or HDC.
  • Execute analyses according to standard test methods within specific technique areas, addressing sample treatment and instrument errors, and adjusting test methods as needed with or without assistance from a Specialist III or Expert.
  • Interpret analysis data for accuracy and precision, sending results to requestors and making preliminary comparisons between reference and complaint materials.
  • Report results primarily as technical reports in Biovia notebook.
  • Discuss results, technical problems, and new requests with colleagues from the analytical services group, and the physical, polymer, and paint development laboratories.
  • Develop new test methods to address specific requests or improve existing methods due to new equipment capabilities, maintaining test methods through statistical analysis to ensure accuracy and precision, under the guidance of a Specialist III or Expert.
  • Demonstrate a strong motivation for innovation in testing paint and resin materials or conducting kinetic reaction studies for new chemistries in development, maintaining and expanding knowledge and expertise in analytical science.
  • Collaborate with local and global product development and solution teams, as well as local operations.
  • Adhere to all corporate and site policies/procedures regarding personal conduct, Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE), and Product Safety & Regulatory Affairs (PSRA) standards, ensuring team compliance with AN HSE and compliance policies.

What do you need to have to be successful in this role?

  • Master's degree with 0-2 years of experience, Bachelor's degree with 1-3 years of experience or 7-9 years of relevant experience
  • Good track record of industrial experience in multinational organization or at university in preferably polymer & paints analytics or organic compound analyses.
  • Knowledge of chromatographic analytical techniques for polymer & paint analysis: HPLC/UPLC, GPEC, (triple-)GPC, LC-MS, HS-GC, TD-GC-MS and HDC
  • Pro-active and pragmatic self-starter, result-oriented mindset
  • Continuous drive to improve him or herself as well as the team
  • Good knowledge of main office software (MS-Office)
  • Able to communicate verbally and in writing in English
